PortAventura World from Salou: everything you need to know (and where to eat after)
Salou has beach, seafront and gastronomy. But what sets it apart from any other Mediterranean destination is what lies eight minutes away: PortAventura World, with three theme parks and six hotels within the resort.
What follows is a guide to getting the most out of it, whether you're staying at the resort or based in Salou.
PortAventura Park: the heart of the resort
The original park, opened in 1995, remains the centrepiece. Over a hundred rides spread across six themed worlds: Mediterrània, Polynesia, México, Far West, China and SésamoAventura. Dragon Khan, Shambhala and Stampida share space with live shows, restaurants and areas designed for every age group. One full day is genuinely not enough to cover everything.
The practical approach: arrive early, tackle the highest-demand rides in the first hours and leave the shows for the afternoon. Guests staying at the resort's hotels get early park access before general opening — a meaningful advantage during peak season.
Ferrari Land: speed and spectacle
The second park, opened in 2017, is the only Ferrari-themed park outside Italy. Red Force — at 112 metres the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Europe, going from 0 to 180 km/h in five seconds — is the centrepiece. The rest of the park revolves around the world of Formula 1 and Ferrari culture: driving simulators, personalisation experiences and architecture drawn from Maranello.
More compact than PortAventura Park, it works well as a combination visit on the same day with good time management.
Caribe Aquatic Park: water and stillness
The water park runs through the summer season and is the natural choice on the hottest days. Slides, wave machines, lazy rivers and relaxation areas with sun loungers. Tutuki Splash and King Khajuna are the most popular attractions. Over 30,000 square metres of water facilities right on the Costa Daurada.
The resort hotels
Six hotels operate within the PortAventura World resort, each with its own theme: Hotel PortAventura (Far West), Hotel Colorado Creek (American wilderness), Hotel Gold River (Colorado River), Hotel Caribe (Caribbean), Hotel El Paso (American Southwest) and Hotel Mansión de Lucy (The Mysterious City of the Clouds). Staying on site means direct park access, early entry and no need to deal with parking.
Those who prefer the beach and seafront choose Salou as their base. Getting to PortAventura is straightforward: eight minutes by car or twenty-five on foot.
Where to eat after the park
After a day of adrenaline, noise and queues, the body has a very clear way of asking for what it needs: slow fire, real product and time to sit down without rushing. At Carbònic, on Carrer Major in Salou, the oak charcoal grill runs at exactly the pace that moment demands. Txuletón of old cow aged over 30 days, or premium imported cuts such as Angus strip loin from Uruguay, Black Angus skirt steak from the US or A5 Wagyu striploin from Japan. And a wine list of over 400 references chosen directly from the producers. Five minutes on foot from the seafront, eight minutes by car from the resort.
